Very interesting news on the new Amazing Spider-man movie. As reported by SuperHeroHype (and many many others).  Avi Arad’s statement:

“It’s not a comeback. You have to look at it this way. Do you want to know more about Spider-Man? This movie is going to tell stories that you didn’t see in movies 1, 2 and 3.”

There is all sorts of discussion going on about how this can be possible, given the cast of characters. For one, isn’t Uncle Ben dead?  Webshooters?  With such a simple statement, it is easy to poke holes in it. Furthermore, the Spider-man universe as defined by Marvel comics is not immune from backpedalling, easy outs and ignoring the past in order take stories in new directions.  There is a long history of being fuzzy on the details, this is just a little more in your face since there are only 3 movies worth of history.

On the other hand, if you are not going to get mired down in the details of Sam Raimi’s Spider-man trilogy, then how can you possibly be still working in that universe? I don’t think you can have it both ways. Either you commit to “keeping it real, Raimi style” or you go off in another direction.

In the end, who really cares? It is a new cast and crew telling a new Spider-man story. A commitment to what Raimi created makes no sense, and in fact would likely make the new movie less interesting if you are handcuffing yourself. The comic book world is all about bringing a fresh new take on classic characters through new writers and artists, so there is no reason not to take that approach in the film world as well.

So for me Arad’s comments feel more like corporate BS just trying to play both sides by addressing criticism for such a quick reboot while not really committing to anything, structure wise. The comments seem silly, but hey, it has everyone talking about the movie, so mission accomplished.
